Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight he tackles the movie that made Bruce Campbell a movie star: The Evil Dead!
So much emphasis is always placed on either 'Evil Dead II' or 'Army of Darkness' while many sort of cast aside the original and I get it; it's not as polished, not as memorable and certainly not as goofy. That's right, 'The Evil Dead' is a straight up horror flick, no real comedy here but it does still have a strange sense of twisted fun throughout, including one scene involving an amorous tree...yeah... The film is your basic set up; young, attractive people enjoying a weekend cabin getaway until they're terrorized by demons, we've all been there, but the movie succeeds with its high energy and engaging performances. 'The Evil Dead' is also notable for starting the career of Bruce Campbell who would go on to become the biggest cult movie star of our time [insert quote here]. This movie is a blast
