About two decades ago I went into Halloween III: Season of the Witch not knowing that filmmakers John Carpenter and Debra Hill intended the second sequel to their classic Halloween to be the jumping off point for a franchise of horror flicks set on and around the creepy holiday, but not related to the original film. Gone was Michael Myers . . . and that's all I needed to shut this otherwise decent flick right off!
A large Halloween mask-making company has plans to kill millions of American children with something sinister hidden in Halloween masks.
I credit contributor Matt Bellamy with prompting this viewing. He's right, this is a bad movie. But it's a good bad movie. Sure, the plot is dumb, the villain's motivation nonsensical, and leading man Tom Atkins spends most of the flick nailing the hot daughter of a murder victim. Truth be told, I'm down with all of this, especially the nailing of the hot daughter part.
There's also beheadings, killer robots in business suits, and Halloween masks that murder thousands of children on Halloween night. And that God damn Silver Shamrock song. I love and hate it at the same time.
Suffice to say, this is one of those so-bad-it's-good movies. A guilty pleasure. 'Nuff said.
Had this movie not been called Halloween III, I think it'd have been well received by critics and fans. It's not a good movie, not by a long shot, but taken on it's on terms, it's fine. In fact, as much as I still kinda resent Season of the Witch's existence, I'm gonna give it a Good because I know I'll catch it again. It is, after all, a Halloween movie. And Tom Atkins is the man!
