The Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 70s throwback Grindhouse didn't do well at the box office. But, for those movie geeks who saw it, the three hours plus (with fake previews) trashy double bill was a rare gem. Watching Grindhouse in a theatre is still one of my Top 5 favourite movie theatre experiences. Too. Much. Crazy. Fun.
Of the two flicks, I remember Rodriguez's Planet Terror being the stronger. Tarantino's Death Proof was just too yappy. How does Planet Terror hold up six years later? Stick with me.
After an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it's up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release.
In short, yes it does. Planet Terror is a gory good time with over-the-top violence, a stellar cast (talking about YOU Jeff Fahey, Michael Parks, Michael Biehn, Bruce Willis, Marley Shelton and Josh Brolin) and more than a few scenes that remind us Rose McGowan is hot.
Yes, she ends up with a machine gun for a leg. Just roll with it. It's part of the fun.
Kudos too to Freddy Rodriguez, who makes for one bad ass action dude.
There's not much more to be said. I really like Planet Terror, and recommend it to any B-movie nut who has yet to see it. But, ideally, catch it and Death Proof in the proper Grindhouse format.
A Good, y'all.
