Well, The Basement's last word on reboots, remakes and rewhatevers. I know movie geeks will go on and on about how Hollywood has run out of original ideas and is just riding the gravy train of successful franchises. No matter what is said here, that will be the general opinion among film bloggers.
And they'll be right.
But here's the bottom line from yours truly, one who has -- along with my partner in crime Shawn -- pissed and moaned about Hollywood repeatedly going back to the well and rehashing tried and true flicks and franchises. Yes, I'd rather see Hollywood come up with new ideas, but filmmakers won't stop rebooting and remaking movies, so there's no point in getting my back up about it.
The deal breaker for me was the announcement that Disney and Lucasfilm want to reboot the Indiana Jones films, with Chris Pratt considered as the new Dr. Henry Jones Jr. At first, I was outraged. How dare they! There's only one Indiana Jones! Leave it alone already!
Then it I realized it doesn't matter what I, or anyone else, thinks; if that's what Disney and Lucasfilm want to do, they'll do it. Harrison Ford is too old to play Indy, the last attempt with him sucked, and there's a couple of generations that have never seen the original films and won't bother, because they're old. The movies that is.
I accept this could happen, and believe Chris Pratt would be a fine Indiana Jones. The Bond and Batman franchises have carried on with various actors in the lead, often with success. If we get a new Indiana Jones movie starring someone other than Harrison Ford, I'll give it a chance. If it's good, great. If not, I still have the original flicks to enjoy until the day I die.
Last word, getting mad about Hollywood remakes and reboots isn't going to stop them from happening. Nor will it prevent people from going to see them. In the end, I'd rather put my energy toward something else, like grabbing another beer from the fridge.
And they'll be right.
