Mike S versus Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Normally, I'd write something witty at the start of a review, and a quick synopsis of the plot.  Today however, I'm going to skip that and get to the meat of my review of 2016's "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them".

I really love the Harry Potter books (I read "The Deathly Hallows" in one sitting), and really enjoyed the movies.

I have to say though, that of the franchise, this movie is probably my favorite so far.

Why?

I felt that there was more heart to this movie and less angst.  Amidst the adventure and action of the main series, there was an overshadowing feeling of dreariness that I couldn't escape.  "Fantastic Beasts" was much lighter while still maintaining the feeling of wonder and adventure from the main films.  Also, the scale of this movie was smaller and more intimate.

The story, while not necessarily as deep and intense as the main series, it still had some nicely tense and exciting moments that were well balanced with humour and drama.  The characters were very enjoyable and engaging.  I came to care about each of them, and am looking forward to more tales showing their adventures.

The acting was great.  The performers really brought the characters to life, and made each of them unique and interesting.  The chemistry between them helped to add to the depth of their relationships.

All in all, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is a wonderful addition to the Potterverse, and I would certainly recommend it to others.  It's going into "The Good".
